Women’s health concerns are not widely discussed amongst friends and family for various reasons – some might feel ashamed while others just see it as part of the process of aging. When the symptoms are detected, usually cancer or illness is already at a stage that is hard to cure. The sad truth is that these 5 common ailments faced by women in Singapore can be treated and even prevented with sufficient knowledge and early medical intervention. Read on to find out what you should do to decrease your risk of getting these health issues.

#1. Osteoporosis

This is one of the most common health issues faced by women, especially after menopause when their level of estrogen drops. Though it is part of aging, we can take steps to protect our bones and reduce the risk of getting osteoporosis. It’s never too early to start! Good lifestyle habits and a healthy diet is important – such as taking food rich in iron and calcium or supplements.

#2. Colorectal Cancer

Mostly diagnosed in those over the age of 50 years old, it is the second most common cancer women have in Singapore. As it takes 5 to 10 years for a polyp to turn cancerous, regular colonoscopy can help to prevent colorectal cancer.

#3. Urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is when one has little or no control over the exertion of urine. If you have this symptom, you will experience leakage of urine when you sneeze, run or when carrying out other actions. According to National University Hospital, 10-20% of the women experience SUI.

As for Pelvic organ prolapse, it is when women experience the dropping of the womb, bladder or bowel through the vagina. It is estimated that 50% of the women are suffering from this condition, but did not seek treatments for it. Most of them accept urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse as part of aging, but there are actually ways to prevent it, such as pelvic floor exercises. Surgery can also help to improve the condition for severe cases.

#4. Breast Cancer

One develops breast cancer when breast cells become abnormal after being triggered by female hormones and form a tumour. Women who had their first pregnancy after the age of 30 also run a higher risk of getting breast cancer as compared to women who had their first pregnancy before the age of 30. The risk of getting breast cancer also increases if someone in your family has it. As the risk of having breast cancer also increases with age, you should get a mammogram once every two years if you’re over the age of 50.

#5. Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is the 10th most common cancer women have in Singapore. Sadly, it is highly preventable and curable if they had gone for vaccination. One of the most common causes of cervical cancer is Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection. Only women who are sexually active are exposed to the risk of getting it. Therefore, the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination works best before one becomes sexually active. It is available for anyone aged between 9 to 26 years old. The Singapore government even encourages its residents to go by allowing women to use $400 per year from their Medisave for the vaccinations.

You can detect these symptoms early and prevent it. Visit the nearest women’s clinic and go for regular screenings!
