5 common Signs Of A Weak Immune System


A strong immune system is the key to fighting off bacteria and viruses. Are you paying enough attention to your body? Of course, everyone is different – while it’s normal for you to recover from a cold or flu within a few days’ time, the usual time taken for your friend to recover from a common cold or flu might take longer.   Therefore, it’s important to take note of what is normal for you. 

Other than your immune system, factors such as the environment, stress and underlying illness can affect your body too. When you feel stress, your body releases a hormone called the cortisol which can suppress your immune system, making you vulnerable to viruses and bacteria. Underlying illness on the other hand, weakens your immune system. Therefore, it is important to observe and take note of your body to find out what is making you prone to falling sick.

#1. Repeated infections. It’s normal to have infections such as gingivitis, conjunctivitis or an ear infection every now and then. However, did you notice them returning repeatedly even after you have completed your dosage of antibiotics and medicines? These medicines are supposed to help you kill the virus or bacteria causing these infections. But with a weak immune system, the body has a hard time getting rid of these viruses and bacteria, thus your infections return again and again! 

#2. Tired constantly. It’s perfectly normal to feel tired by the end of the day if you’re working daily overtime in the office from Monday to Friday. But with 7 to 8 hours of sleep, are you still tired despite being well-rested? When your immune system is weak, did you know that your energy level will be low too? That’s because your body is trying to conserve as much energy as it can. 

This energy conserved will be used for your immune system to ward off viruses and bacteria. As a result, no matter how many hours you’ve slept or how many cups of coffee you’ve downed throughout the day to keep yourself energized, it does not help at all.

#3. Digestive problems. Do you have diarrhoea, constipation, bloating or gas frequently? These could be a sign of a weak immune system as these symptoms show that the quality of your gut flora is low. With a lack of good intestinal bacteria, your gut won’t be able to support your immune system as it cannot fend off infections in your gut.

#4. Recovery seems to take forever. Cold or flu usually goes away within a week. If your cold or flu seems to take forever, your immune system might be weak hence it is having trouble to fight off the sickness.  

#5. Always sick. Do you always catch the flu bug whenever someone in the office is sick? This might be a sign of a weak immune system as your body is not well equipped to fend off the germs carried by your coworkers.
