3 WAYS TO FIGHT DIZZY SPELLS WITH TCM

Whether you experience dizzy spells constantly or once in a while, most of us would have had dizzy spells before.

However, dizziness can imply a varying of sensation – light-headedness or vertigo. Light-headedness is the feeling of blacking out or fainting, while vertigo is having the sensation that things around you are spinning, causing you to feel unbalanced and having difficulty moving about.

What causes dizziness?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, dizziness is believed to be caused by a few factors

    • Anemia
    • Excessive Yang energy

For anemic patient, it is usually accompanied by low blood pressure. They will find themselves usually lethargic or having lack of energy. Some tonic and supplements will be able to replenish the body, acting as an energy booster and cure the dizzy spells.

Yang energy becomes excessive when one eats too much cold food. Excessive consumption of cold drinks and foods cause phlegm and ‘dampness’ in the body to accumulate. It affects the digestive system and blocks the ‘Yang’ energy from rising from the abdomen. In such cases, usually, it only takes a few TCM treatments to easily stop the dizzy spells from happening.

TCM Treatments

TCM practitioners will prescribe a variety of herbal medicines as well as other treatments such as acupuncture based on the diagnosis of the patient. However, here are some of the more common treatments to treat dizzy spells.

1. TCM Herbs

Gingko Biloba leaf extract is widely used in TCM to treat dizzy spells. They can be found in supplements such as the Activated Gingko Tablets. This is useful for anemic patients who experience dizziness as ginkgo is also beneficial for reducing blood viscosity, protecting the arterial walls and maintaining healthy blood vessel.

Other than treating dizziness, they have been used widely for thousands of years in TCM practice to reduce the mental decline associated with aging.

Other than Ginkgo Biloba, other herbs that may be prescribed by the TCM physicians are liquorice, white peony and dong quai, also commonly known as female ginseng.

2. Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been used by thousands of years to treat acute illness such as vertigo, pain relief and other symptoms. Acupuncture treatment typically uses hair-thin needles to insert into specific points of the body. The needles used are so thin that most who undergo acupuncture felt nothing more than a tingling sensation.

However, few research and studies are able to reveal the immediate effect acupuncture treatment has on dizziness and vertigo. That being said, acupuncture is a relatively safe and painless treatment. As long as you visit certified TCM physicians, you are in safe hands!

3. Acupressure

Acupressure is a treatment that you can minister on yourself whenever you feel dizzy. The area most of us commonly known for acupressure is the temples. Using either the knuckles, the thumbs or your index fingers, massage on your temples for 5 minutes in a circular motion.

Another location to try for acupressure to help with dizziness is at the point at the top of your head right between the middle of your ears. Using your index fingers, apply gentle pressure for 5 minutes.
