5 Ways To Protect Your Vision Against Harmful Blue Lights

Blue lights are actually just one of the many wavelengths that make up white light. They are emitted by the sun and also our electronic devices.

Did you know that blue light plays an important role in our sleep cycle? It can boost our mood and signal to our body when it’s time to go to bed. So why is the blue light emitted by the sun okay but it becomes harmful once it is emitted by electronic devices?

That’s simply because the blue light emitted by the sun is natural while the one emitted by devices is artificial. Besides, our eyes are not built to be exposed to blue lights for a prolonged period of time. When we are exposed to blue lights for a long period of time, it causes fatigue, eye strain and headaches which is common in dry eyes syndrome.

If your job requires you to be in front of a screen for a prolonged period of time, check out these five ways to protect your eyes from the emission of blue lights from these devices!

#1. Protective screen with blue light filter. Buy screen filters online for your desktop screen, mobile phone and other electronic devices. Not only do they serve as a protective layer that protects your screen from scratches and other damages, it filters out blue light as it leaves the screen, reducing blue light.

#2. Glasses with blue light blocking property. If you wear prescription glasses, include a blue light filter in your glasses. If you do not wear prescription glasses, do not fret as there are non-prescription glasses which you can wear while you work away in front of your computer screen. These blue-light filters can reflect at least 50% of the blue light emitting from the screen!

#3. Make full use of your nighttime options on your devices! If you are using iPhone, head to Settings and under Display & Brightness, turn on your Night Shift. You would notice that the phone’s display turned warmer, with a tinge of orange. This way, you would be exposed to lesser blue light.

#4. Adjust your office lighting. Is there sufficient lighting in your workplace? Working in low ambient light will force your eyes to work harder. Similarly, if there is glare from the windows behind your screen, it can also strain the eyes. Shift your screen so that its side is facing the windows or add a curtain. If there is not enough lighting, add a desk lamp to your workspace.

#5. 20/20/20 rule. Every 20 minutes take a 20-second break by looking at something that is at least 20 feet away to give your eyes a break from the screen and the blue light. Alternatively, closing your eyes for 20 seconds work as well. Set an alarm or download apps that will remind you to take a break!
