5 Simple Ways To Handle Your Picky Eaters At Home

As your child slowly grows up, he gets more exposure to various kinds of food. His taste bud also develops a liking for certain food over the rest – making him a picky eater that is hard to deal with at mealtimes. Other than dealing with their tantrums, the more pressing issue is how to get them to consume the food they dislike so they have the nutrients they need for growth?

#1. Serve only one meal

If your child refused to eat what you’ve served, do not attempt to make another meal for your child as this will encourage your child to be a picky eater. For every meal, prepare one dish your child likes and make it a balanced meal.

#2. Strictly no bribing

Many parents tend to promise the child their favourite snacks or food if they finish their meal. This will not help them to break away from their habit of being a picky eater. They will only see eating the meal in front of them a stepping stone to their ‘reward’. If there is no ‘reward’ in the future, they will still be a picky eater and refuse to eat on their own accord.

#3. Make it fun!

Have you seen those amazing kids bentos made by Japanese moms? They are a great way to make eating a fun time for your child! They are colourful and usually modelled after cartoon characters – also known as charaben which purpose was to interest kids so they would eat food they usually have no interest in. Follow a tutorial and make your very own bento with your child’s favourite cartoon characters or where your creativity takes you!

#4. Get your kids involved

As you prepare your kids’ meal, get them to be your little chefs or assistants! You can hand them simple tasks such as cutting an egg in halves with a plastic knife or plating the food. Get them involved can help them create that sense of pride that they made their own food and hence less prone to being a picky eater.
