Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure is a common concern amongst the middle-aged and the elderly in Singapore. While there are medications for hypertension, hypotension, also known as low blood pressure has no medication. Low blood pressure is usually deem as less life-threatening as high blood pressure. 

In fact, many people might have low blood pressure even without realizing it as they might not even display any symptoms of it! Here are 5 facts most people do not know about hypotension. 

1. Hypotension symptoms

As stated, many who have low blood pressure might not even realize it themselves as the symptoms are not widely known. Other than fainting spells, and dizziness, other symptoms include: 

    • Confusion
    • Nauseousness 
    • Vomiting 
    • Cold, clammy skin

2. Salt Can Help

Though usually those diagnosed with low blood pressure are not recommended any medications or 保健品 other than to monitor their symptoms, increasing your sodium intake can help to maintain your blood pressure. Salt is closely linked with electrolytes, therefore increasing your intake of salt can raise your blood pressure to reach the normal range. But do be mindful of your intake to prevent your blood pressure from becoming too high. 

3. Drink More Water

Did you know that drinking water can help to create more blood? Sitting in the office working all day makes it easy for your body to be in a constant state of dehydration. 4. Hormonal Change

Hormones can be one of the contributing factors for your low blood pressure. During pregnancy, the body produces more progesterone, altering the blood pressure leading to lower blood pressure. However, the blood pressure usually goes back to normal by itself without the need for medication after sometime. 

5. Anemia is linked with low blood pressure

Usually those who suffer from low blood pressure suffer from anemia as well. Anemia is when the person has a low count of red blood cells, which is closely linked to the insufficient amount of nutrients in the body such as iron and B12.  Vegetarians tend to face this more since they would miss out more on the good sources of iron. Simply increase your intake of iron or B12 vitamins with supplements to help with your blood pressure. This is also good for everyone to ensure a well-balanced diet.
